Guide Interpreting For Non-native Speakers Of English

With the rapid development of the inbound tourism, there is an increasing request for English guide interpreters, who conduct guide interpreting in the tourist industry and activities. Many guide interpreters have been accustomed to working for native English speakers. However, in recent years, more and more non-native English tourists show keen interests in visiting China. Therefore, how to act as a qualified guide interpreter in the service of the non-native speakers of English is more challenging and more arduous.Based on the reporter’s guide interpreting for athletes who attend2013Nanjing Asian Youth Games, the report aims to analyze the difficulties encountered in the interpreting for non-native speakers of English and to give correspondent solutions. The reporter mainly discusses four difficulties the reporter has encountered:difficulty in understanding non-native speakers of English; difficulty in translating culturally-loaded lexemes; difficulty in memorizing the key information; difficulty in being a know-all interpreter. Although some problems may occur in the guide interpreting for the native English speakers, they are thornier and more complex. Through further analysis, the reporter puts forward four "A" solutions:adaption to English varieties; adoption of three dimensional transformations (referring to linguistic-dimensional transformation, cultural-dimensional transformation and communicative-dimensional transformation); application of information visualization; acquisition of knowledge in every aspect.As it is still a preliminary study of guide interpreting for non-native speakers of English, the strategies given in the paper are not very comprehensive. The reporter hopes her constructive suggestions could motivate more scholars to dig into guide interpreting for non-native English speakers and offer creative solutions to the guide interpreters.
