The opium problem is an extremely important social problem in theSuiyuan area in the period of the Republic of China. The study on theopium problem is not only an integral part of the study on the Suiyuansocial history and the history of opium but also plays an important role inthe research of Suiyuan province in the period of the Republic of China.The research object of the thesis is the conflicts between the officials andthe ordinary people. The thesis analyzes the ban on opium-smoking, theneed of the revenue from opium, the profit of opium planting of farmers,the government levied taxes, the final conflict between the governmentand the public and so on.The introduction is the research value, research status and researchachievement on the opium problem and the paper shows the origin andsignificance of this paper. The thesis consists of three parts. The firstchapter analyzes the achievements of the government’s ban onopium-smoking in the Suiyuan area. The second chapter discusses thereasons why the ban on opium-smoking is hard to be carried out underthe background of the need of taxation. The third chapter expounds theconflict between the government and the farmers and the final resolution.Finally on the basis of the summary of the paper, I get the conclusion.
