Francis Poulenc (1899-1963), famous French composer, pianist, important member of the French "Les Six", one of the most important personages in the area of music of20th Century in France. He played a very important role in the development of neo-classicism. Poulenc’s masterpieces strive not only the aesthetics with elegance and meticulous, but also the scent of the modern music. Based on the natural note and the melody, he decorated with unharmonious note, so that the emotion of the music is enriched.This thesis is to introduce the music style of neo-classicism, analyses the background, the structure of the musical form and the characteristic of the harmony. As a violinist, I researched and introduced thoroughly the way of interpretation of the piece with a combination of sensibility and exploration.This thesis composed with foreword, three chapters and conclusion. The foreword introduces mainly the main content, the importance and the value of this thesis. Chapter One introduces mainly the style of neo-classicism in Poulenc’s masterpieces. Chapter Two analyses the music in the three movements of this sonata. Chapter Three is the key point of this thesis. The Author, based on her experience of the practice, researched and introduced thoroughly the way of interpretation of this sonata. The conclusion summarizes the musical language, musical image and the style of interpretation of this Poulenc’s violin sonata.
