In daily communication, the use of indirect speech act is a very common languagephenomenon. British philosopher J. Austin is the first person to propose Speech ActTheory and then American philosopher and linguist J. Searle who is Austin’s studentdeveloped it further. As for the field of speech acts studies, a lot of attention has been paidto the matter of the interpretation of indirect speech acts. Different linguists apply variousmethods and theories to explain the importance and effectiveness of indirect speech act ininterpersonal communication. Although the previous studies of indirect speech act focus ondifferent aspects, no theories can interpret the implementation of the indirect speech actthoroughly and systematically.On the basis of existing researches, this paper attempts to elaborate and study theprocess of interpreting and understanding the ISAs from the perspective of pragmatic andcognitive respectively in a comprehensive and systematic way. It can not only overcomethe deficiency of previous study, but can better explain the high efficiency when peopledeal with indirect speech acts. The theoretical basis is provided by the framework ofpragmatics and cognitive. Based on Grice’s Cooperative Principle and Relevance Theoryof Sperber and Wilson, the thesis analyzes the interpretation process of the indirect speechacts. It provides a better understanding of how people deduce and interpret the ISAs indaily conversation or communication.The use of indirect speech act in English listening comprehension is a commonlanguage phenomenon. To some extent, English listening has correlation with the indirectspeech acts. Considering this background, the author attempts to apply some relevanttheories of ISAs to College English listening Teaching and discusses how to improve thelearners’ language communicative competence, training students deeply understand theIndirect Speech Acts in language learning, further to help students improve their listeningcomprehension ability.
