I make a study about Marcel Proust’s special concept of time in the view of modernity inthis thesis. During the late19th century and early20th century, there was a obvious breakagein the develop of Western civilization: The ancient concept of time separate with the moderntime thoroughly as modern society was coming with everything destroyed. And also the basisof existing was lost because the modern society always runs to the future ignoring the pastand today. The fast time of modern society has damaged the life of people, deprive them ofpoetic habitation, and also result in opposition between man and nature. So it is an inevitable problem to deal with the relationship between time and man.Philosopher of the20th century became view time as a concept of inherent thing. In that era,Proust studies the thought of stretching time by Bergson, so he makes efforts to find the losttime in his novel A la Recherche de Temps Perdu. He lets the time turn to the past and sees histrue inner time as the foundation of his life. He tries his best to against the concept of moderntime and puts forward his own unique time of aesthetic. In the novel A la Recherche de Temps Perdu, Proust describes two kinds of time: one isthe nature time and the other is the aesthetic time. In nature time people live and die, while inaesthetic time they can have the eternity with perceptual experience. It seems to Proust thattime can not exist without man. It belongs to man’s inner heart and exists in perceptualmemory like "Madeline Lena" cookies. Once people recall their past under the same situationof yesterday and today, time is found. As long as we turn to our true inner feeling andperceptual experience from the external pursuit and instrumental rationality, time can beultimately found without the boundary of past and today. Proust views the time as his innerlife aesthetics. He shows people the legend that how lost time can be found again. Also hehelps the people find the lost habitation in a poetic way.
