A Study On The Chinese Translation Of English Discourse Of Strcam-of-Consciousness Based On The Six-Space Model From The Perspective Of Conceptual Integration Theory

This thesis applies Conceptual Integration Theory (CIT) to make the comparativeanalysis of the two Chinese versions of Virginia Woolf’s representative work To theLighthouse. It attempts to analyze the advantages and disadvantages about reproducing thestream-of-consciousness features and tries to discuss whether six-space translation modelwhich is based on the CIT can apply to the Chinese translation of English discourse ofstream-of-consciousness.The discourse of stream-of-consciousness which focuses on the characters’ perceptuallife, inner feeling and consciousness flow has features of stream-of-consciousness. It bringssome difficulties to translation, so it is necessary to explore how to reproduce the features ofstream-of-consciousness better. Since1930s, Woolf’s stream-of-consciousness features havearoused the interests of the domestic scholars but the further studies about her works began1980s, mainly concentrating on the novel theory, writing practice and the feminism criticizes.However, the translation studies about her works are few. Woolf’s works have the particularand obvious stream-of-consciousness features and To the Lighthouse is the mostrepresentative one. The thesis summarizes some typical features, like space-time interwovenfeature, poetic aesthetics feature and musical narrative feature， and apply CIT to explorethe reproduction effect of those features in the Chinese versions.Recently, with the development of the cognitive linguistics, it has the feasibility to applyCIT to study the cognitive processing of translators. Conceptual Integration Theory, alsonamed as Conceptual Blending Theory, was put forward by Fauconnier in Mapping inThought and Language in1997. Wang Bin (2001) was the first man who applied the CIT intothe translation in China and illustrates that the source text combining with target schematacomes into being of blended text of translation under the sharing generic schemata. Based onthe CIT and its application in translation, the author proposes the six-space translation modeland combines the translation versions of To the Lighthouse to make the reference fortranslating the stream-of-consciousness literature.The thesis has two purposes. Firstly, it enriches the application of CIT on the translationaspect and provides a new translation perspective for stream-of-consciousness literature;secondly, it tries to propose some translation strategies by applying the six-space translationmodel for the purpose of lowering the translating difficulties. In a word, this thesis hopes to reveal the mind pattern of translators in the process of translating stream-of-consciousnessliterature and extend the results to other stream-of-consciousness literature translationpractice.
