Cognitive linguistics has wide research scope as a hot linguistic topic. Image-schematheory is vital in linguistics which has been enriched increasingly with the development oflinguistics. This thesis applies image-schema theory to analyze the phenomenon of culturalimage-schema transmission in English translation of Chinese tour commentary from theperspective of cognition. It is tentative to discuss whether image-schema theory can beapplied into the study of English translation of Chinese tour commentary, and to discuss itsreferential significance to translation practice.Image-schema is a concise and basic dynamic cognitive structure comes from theinteraction in daily life. It helps us form visible schema to interpret abstract conception basedon specific image-schema. This theory was firstly proposed by Lakoff and Johnson in TheMetaphor We Live By published in1980. Image-schema is analog representation, whichmeans taking a certain form to represent sensory experience. Image-schema shows itsimportance when a concept is mapped into another one. Image-schema is a common cognitivemode which emphasizes applying the cognition of objective external world to the cognition ofabstract things.Image-schema theory helps readers understand abstract conception and unknown field.This function has a close connection with the rich cultural image-schemas in tour commentary.This thesis selects some valuable Chinese tour commentary paragraphs and compares theChinese version with the English version to study the importance of image-schema in theprocess of cultural image-schema transmission in English translation of Chinese tourcommentary. Based on the image-schema theory, this thesis puts emphasis on the strategies ofimage-schema transmission and attempts to conduct English translation of Chinese tourcommentary. The author hopes to provide new developmental space and research value fortranslation study.
