| Ayn Rand is a famous Russian-American writer and public intellectual in the20thcentury. Her works are loved by widespread readers in American and have huge significance.In the age of two rival ideologies, Rand was born in Russia, gone through the OctoberRevolution and was migrated to America when she grew up, which made her have a uniqueand profound ideas about individual, society and the relationship between individual andsociety. From Rand’s novels, we can feel her concerns over individual life and thoughts abouthuman society development. Starting from Ayn Rand’s personal experience and thoughtorigin and adopting the methods of social criticism mode, biographical criticism theory andclose reading, this article takes Ayn Rand’s most influential long novel Atlas Shrugged as thestudy object, systemically and profoundly makes study on―Galt Valley‖in the novel and thecreators born there, and analyzes the thought of―Modern Utopia‖in the novel in order tofurther explore the cultural significance behind it.The article consists of three chapters in structure: In Chapter I, this part finds out therealistic foundation of Ayn Rand’s thought based on clarification of―Utopia‖concept andAyn Rand’s life experience and the historical background, and analyzes the reasons that thethought of―Utopia‖forms based on the influence of modern philosophers including Aristotleand Nietzsche on her. Chapter II deeply explores the construction principles of―ModernUtopia‖by making analysis on―Modern Utopia‖presented in Atlas Shrugged–the systemand superman-like creator of―Galt Valley‖. In Chapter III, this part analyzes the implicationof―Modern Utopia‖from two perspective of social development and idea game–the formerbelieves that―Modern Utopia‖Ayn Rand constructs is actually a different reflection onindustrial civilization by analyzing the relevant plots in the novel; The latter finds that AynRand’s thought of the call of individual rights by studying two distinctive explorations abouthuman society organization form since the age of Enlightenment.Ayn Rand wishes to help the lost people in the20thcentury to find out a light road bypresenting an ideal world in her mind through her most famous novel Atlas Shrugged and―Galt Valley‖is her answer. In an age of―turning to the left‖, Rand attempts to recallindividual rights, which gives people reference and enlightenment until now. |
