As lacquer bowls dug out from Hemudu Site show, Chinese people have been usinglacquerwares made of natural lacquer since from7,000years ago. Due to lacquerware’s traitsof high temperature resistance, moisture resistance, acid resistance as well as its elegant shapeand bright gloss, lacquerware has flourishing development in China. It reached the peak inHan Dynasty and was even spread to overseas. At the later stage of lacquerware development,the complicated technology of “making a delicate goods with thousands of manpower”developed greatly, then the lacquerware gradually deviated from its utilitarian function, andits function of art appreciation began to turn up. During the time of Tang, Song, Yuan andMing Dynasty, the decorative skill of lacquerware developed constantly, and it graduallydeveloped into art. The decorative skill reached the peak in Qing Dynasty. Especially, therepresentative of Yang lacquer art has long history with significant local features. However,with rapid economic and cultural development of modern society, the traditional craft ofYangzhou lacquer art is also influenced inevitably. Therefore, the surviving problem ofYangzhou lacquer art exists in front of researchers.As the representative of traditional lacquer art, the development direction of Yangzhoulacquer art directly influences the inheritance and development of traditional Chinese lacquerart culture. The author thinks the discussion of surviving problem of Yangzhou lacquer arteventually returns to explore the development and design of lacquer art products and theirproduction. Thus, catering utensils with more utilitarian functions should be researched anddeveloped based on keeping the traditional craft of Yangzhou lacquer art. Consequently, thenature of Yangzhou lacquer art can come back. Besides, it will be rooted more deeply inChinese food culture, making Yangzhou lacquer art continue to survive and develop.Moreover, it will make Yangzhou lacquer art integrate into modern life and become people’sindispensable daily supplies as well as a more diverse product which beautifies people’s life.Meanwhile, lacquer art, the outcome of life, once again comes back to our life, and itdevelops again with the modern economic and cultural development. This paper fully digsinto the essence of Yangzhou lacquer art and emphasizes the practicality of this research. Andit thinks the product development and design based on catering utensils should regard“Practicality and Beauty” as basic principle and connect economy, culture and marketorganically, which inherits and develops the catering utensils of Yangzhou lacquer art.
