In the late Ming and early Qing, Chinese Painting has a complicated situation,gradually formed the basic pattern of confrontation between the north and Southpainting division. The North Wang Yuanqi as the leading orthodox school of paintingas representative, and the South with Shi Tao as the leading individuality painting as arepresentative. They are two different styles of painting and artistic concept,especially the different attitude to the traditional, which has a profound impact onfuture generations of painting.In the face of inheritance and innovation of traditional, Wang Yuanqi and Shi Taowas in the difference sides of this point.In the opinon of Wang Yuanqi,the traditionalstyle of Chinese painting should be inherited and every painters must work with onlyone style. But Shi Tao thinks the painter should be without any style restraint and takethat the soul cloud learned from the nature. This differrence influenced thedevelopment of Chinese painting in modern times,but any of them can’t be the saviorof Chinese painting.Still face a double challenge the tradition and change in contemporary Chinesepainting, the Tao and Wang Yuanqi is how to influence their creation differentattitudes towards the traditional, whether this effect for today’s artist is still ofsignificance and learning.
