"Give someone face"、"do someone proud" and so on, these are the people’s dailyword. Face can be borrowed, given, and returned, indicating that it is like some kindof objects that can be exchanged with each other. This research puts forward theconcept of face exchange from the perspective of social exchange theory, and makes acertain degree of theoretical analysis and empirical researches for this dailyphenomenon. The face exchange refers that one people make a decision to give or notto give face to the other people, then the others will payback for it with behaviors thatare related or unrelated with face. This research was separated into three parts: tocompile the questionnaire of face exchange and the analysis of its status, the analysisof resources about face exchange and the functions of face exchange.The preparation for questionnaire of face exchange and analysis of its features.This research suggests that the main form of face exchange includes three types:lifting face, protecting face and damaging face. Lifting face refers that one person liftthe others face; Protecting face refers that the one protects the face of others fromlosing; Damaging face refers that the one damages the others face. Questionnaire offace exchange containing25questions that it is prepared on the basis of that theoryand combined with in-depth interviews and expert opinions,and then it was surveyedon college students;Upon examination, the internal consistency reliability of thequestionnaire is0.804, each dimension’s consistency reliability are all above0.6,thatall achieve statistical standards; Construct validity of the questionnaire to be tested byconfirmatory factor analysis,and the result shows that each indicators all meet themetrology standards, and the result verifies that the questionnaire of face exchangeincludes six dimensions: lifting face, protecting face and damaging face, payback forlifting face, payback for protecting face, payback for damaging face;and it couldexplain53.066%of the total variance. Finally, college students are tested with the useof questionnaire of face exchange, the result shows that there were significantdifferences on payback for lifting face between boys and girls, on lifting face betweenonly child and non-only child, and on payback for damaging face and payback forlifting face between urban and rural students.Analysis of resource of face exchange. In this study, interview materials thatwere collected from19college students and4graduate students were collated andcoded, and a total of120open codes and7selected codes were generated. The7selected codes include: praise, help, improve themselves, sentiment and guanxi, obedience, status and materials. This research compare the resources of faceexchange with resources of social exchange,and it was found that there wassimilarities between them, but the classification—improve themselves—was notincluded in resources of social exchange, for this results,the analysis and thediscussion was been given in this study.Analysis of the function of face exchange. In this study, interview materials thatwere collected from23college students, graduate students and five members of thecommunity were collated and coded, and a total of9positive functions weregenerated, involving both the individual and social levels,it as follows: the peoplewho give face to the others own face, to improve the quality of interpersonalrelationships,to improve mood,to protect self-esteem and self-confidence, to improvethe capacity of themselves, to expand influences to others, to access resources forthem,to incite the motivation of themselves, social functions; A total of6negativefunctions of face exchange was found,it also involves both the individual and sociallevels: feeling the strain, having a negative effect on the people around them and whogive or maintenance face to them, conceited、proud and self-complacent, feelinghypocrisy and growing apart from the others, the problems of themselves or otherproblems can not be found, social impact.
