Taboo is an important part of a country’s culture, it embodies the beliefs of astate and nation and is a common phenomenon in human society. Due to differenttaboo culture, cross-cultural communication failures often occur in overseas Chineseteaching between students and teachers. However, taboos are often ignored. Thispaper takes taboo culture as the research subject, mainly from perspectives ofChinese language teaching and cross-cultural communication, comparing taboos inChina and Madagascar in appellations, words, topics, holiday, social contact,marriage and funeral, diet, focusing on exploring the reasons of cross-culturalcommunication failures resulted from different taboo culture.Based on the cases collected in Madagascar, this paper analyzes the reasons ofcross-cultural communication failures resulted from different taboo culture. And wecan find:1. Taboo is a common cultural phenomenon in China and Madagascarwhich is taken as a warning.2. Taboo is a sensitive issue and it is important tocross-cultural communication in overseas Chinese teaching.3. National culturepsychology, level of students’ Chinese, religion and knowledge of taboo areinfluencing cross-cultural communication.4. We should combine Chinese languageknowledge, language skills teaching with relevant cultural teaching in order toachieve the best teaching effect. As a Chinese teacher, we should have someknowledge about cross-cultural communication and know some different taboosbetween two countries.This paper also puts forward some corresponding strategies and constructivesuggestions to failures in communication when teaching abroad.1.Enhance skills ofdealing with cultural conflicts and the ability of cross-cultural communication.2.Adjust the curriculum of Confucius Institute and add cross-cultural communicationcourse.3. Teachers should use apply books flexibly. Students can have deeper andmore comprehensive understanding of taboos through film, lectures and other forms.
