English To Chinese Translations Of Cosmetics Instructions:a Skopos-Theoretic Perspective

This study aims at probing to issues on English to Chinese translation of cosmetics instructions from the perspective of Skopostheorie. Through a profound review of the theoretical background and recent advancement of Skopostheorie, this thesis analyzes its applicability on the translation of cosmetics instructions. Then it points out some problems in the English to Chinese translation of cosmetics instructions on a comparison between English and Chinese cosmetics instructions and their stylistic features and probes into their solutions with some typical examples.The conclusions drawn from this thesis are as follows. Firstly, based on the enlightenment of Skopostheorie on the English to Chinese translation of cosmetics instructions, it reveals three characteristics of translation under the market circumstance, that is, the functionality of translation is to realize some specific textual and non-textual purposes, the technicality of translation lies in the guarantee of inter-text and intra-text coherence and the morality of translation aims at regulating the loyalty of translation subjects; secondly, English to Chinese translation of cosmetics instructions is faced with two major problems, which are over-translation and semantic vacancy; thirdly, translators’obedience to principles of accuracy and clarity would benefit the realization of target text’s function, principles of loyalty and cultural adaptation would contribute to the regulation of translators’professional ethics and comprehensive application of principles of amplification, subtractive, abridgement and conversion would promote the technicality of translators and target texts.
