As is known to all, Chinese idioms are often quoted by many Chinese state leaders in their political speeches, which requires the interpreters in the Interpreting and Translation Office of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of PRC be competent for such a job. However, the meaning of Chinese idioms cannot be just inferred, for they carry a rich Chinese cultural connotation and is also the essence of Chinese language, which undoubtedly increases the difficulty for the interpreter to do it correctly, quickly and smoothly on the spot.Based on some examples of such cases by the state leaders(news conferences, the state leaders’speeches), the thesis analyzes the problems existing in interpreting Chinese idioms, and proposes tentatively some solutions to how to solve these problems in ICIPS(interpreting Chinese idioms in political speeches).Firstly, the thesis brings forth the situation of ICIPS based on the fact that many Chinese leaders like to quote the Chinese idioms in their speeches, and then discusses the features reflected from ICIPS, which, the author points out, is different from that in written translation. Secondly, the thesis lists some problems occurring in ICIPS and illustrates the causes of such problems, in light of which the author summarizes some requirements for ICIPS. At last, the thesis suggested some solutions to such problems in ICIPS, pointing out that the interpreter can use some techniques to help achieving a successful effect in ICIPS, such as preparation before interpreting, following interpreting criteria, etc. with some specific techniques applicable to ICIPS such as Direct speech for correctness, Generalization for quickness, Replacement for smoothness, Explanation for transcending culture difference, Segmentation against missing, and Self-correction against misinterpreting.
