Improving a student’s reading ability is one of the most important tasks of teachingfor English major. Applying genre-based teaching approach into the reading instructionof English major has provided a new perspective for the cultivation of English majors’reading ability. On the basis of genre analysis of the Systemic Functional LinguisticSchool, referring to Sunny Hyon’s genre-based reading teaching experiment, the thesisattempts to put forward genre-based staged-reading teaching mode, which is expected toincrease the students’ genre knowledge so as to improve their reading ability. Based onthe analysis of data collected in the teaching experiment, it is concluded that thegenre-based staged-reading teaching mode can better heighten students’ reading abilityand motivate their reading interest. The study has explored the feasibility of applyingthe genre-based teaching approach to the reading instruction of English major andprovides evidence for the effectiveness of genre-based teaching approach in cultivatingstudents’ reading ability, which is valuable to the reading instruction of English major.
