The core idea of the new curriculum and English curriculum standards both set standards for students' language competence and put higher requirements for junior high school students' reading ability.This study,from the perspective of genre-based teaching approach,attempts to explore an effective teaching method in English reading class with the purpose of improving students' reading proficiency and cultivating good reading habits.The experimental teaching has intended to find answers to the following two research questions.First,compared with the traditional teaching method,can genre-based teaching approach improve middle school students' English reading proficiency more efficiently? Secondly,compared with traditional teaching methods,can genre-based teaching approach help cultivate middle school students' reading habits?Based on literature research,this paper first defines the core concepts and reviews the current situations of genre teaching methods in foreign language teaching.Then,by means of questionnaires,pre-test and interviews,this paper makes an investigation and analysis of middle school students' English reading level and reading habits.It then moves on to randomly choose an experimental class to conduct an experimental study of English reading teaching under the guidance of genre-based teaching approach.After the experiment,a post-test and a questionnaire survey are conducted to test students' reading proficiency and reading habits.Relevant data before and after the experiment show that the English reading performance of the experimental class has been greatly improved,and the overall English reading habits are also better.Through data collection and comparative analysis,it is proved that genre-based teaching approach is superior to traditional teaching method.Based on the findings,the author draws the following inspirations:(1)Genre-based approach can help teachers understand the mechanism of discourse construction.(2)Genre teaching method can help students improve their understanding ability effectively.(3)Genre teaching method can help students form good reading habits.Teachers should grasp the text and set learning goals.
