Reading is an important way to obtain information and master knowledge,and it is also a prerequisite and basis for acquiring other language skills.An important part of English teaching is to develop students' reading ability.The English Curriculum Standards for Senior High School(2017 edition)advocates that English teachers should attach importance to language knowledge in English reading teaching,and develop textual awareness to help students grasp the specific structure,stylistic features and expressions of different texts.However,at present,most English teachers in senior high school still use a traditional method,paying too much attention to the understanding of language knowledge and ignoring the further analysis of the text.This kind of method is not conducive to improving students' reading ability.Based on genre and genre analysis,genre-based approach is applied to language teaching,in which reading activities are carried out with the schematic structure of the discourse to promote students' comprehensive understanding.Therefore,on the basis of genre theory,schema theory and the theory of zone of proximal development,various reading activities are designed to answer the following two research questions:1)What is the impact of genre-based teaching on senior high school students' genre awareness in English reading?2)What is the impact of genre-based teaching on senior high school students' reading ability?In this study,70 students from two intact classes in grade 2 of a senior high school in Yueyang were used as experimental subjects.A 16-week teaching experiment was conducted.Genre teaching method was adopted in the experimental class.While the conventional English reading teaching was carried out in the control class.Experimental data were collected through questionnaires,interviews,reading comprehension test papers and other instruments.The statistical analysis was performed on the data using SPSS 23.0 software.The major findings are as follows: on the one hand,genre-based approach has exerted a positive effect on students' genre awareness.When reading texts,students can quickly identify different genre texts,grasp the language characteristics,social culture and text structure of different texts.On the other hand,genre-based approach can effectively promote students' levels of reading comprehension,and develop their ability to generalize and make inference.Therefore,genre-based approach can be effectively applied to English reading teaching in senior high school and improve reading comprehension ability.
