As China’s overall national strength and international status have been greatlyenhanced, the country has become the focus of the international community. TheGovernment Work Report (GWR), a major source of information with regard to China’scurrent situation and policies for home and abroad, is concerned with aspects such aspolitics, economy, livelihood and diplomacy. In recent years, studies on the Englishtranslation of GWR have been gaining popularity among scholars. As such, research onthe English rendering of GWR has been conducted from different perspectives, enablingeffective viewpoints. This paper therefore takes the functionalist approach, mainly using the skopostheory and text typology as the theoretical framework, and conducts a relativelycomprehensive study on the translation of the latest2013GWR, which demonstratesChina’s current national conditions and policies, at the lexical, syntactical and textuallevels. Since the translation is targeted at native speakers, the language used should beidiomatic and acceptable to them while being faithful to the source content. The research of the present paper is currently tentative. Problems such as categoryword and redundant intensifier in the English version of GWR are explored by theauthor. Hopefully, through the analysis of the2013GWR, feasible GWR translationprinciples can be deduced which can provide reference for the rendering of similarpolitical documents.
