This thesis aimes to research on the relationship between the scholarship and rhetoric of Ouyang Xiu. Ouyang, as a titan living during the time when Song dynasty changed from the early period to the mid time, was a great scholar in almost every aspect, no matter in confusion classic studying, antiquarian, literature or politics. Ouyang also covered a great portion of the role the scholar-bureaucrats played during the early Song Dynasty. He was a scholar and also good at official work. Ouyang also paid great passion into caring the moral condition and working of the scholar-bureaucrats. At the sam time, he refered literature as something attached these two good qualities. While Ouyang as a guwen writer, he still paid more attention to literature than writers before him. This means to research on the relationship between the scholarship and rhetoric of Ouyang Xiu, you have to study the condition of politics, the scholarship and the spirit of scholar-bureaucrats in the early Song dynasty, which did have great many relationship in between the scholarship and rhetoric of Ouyang Xiu.This thesis contains three components, preface, text and conclusion.The preface is divided into two parts, introduction and the meaning of this study. The preface tries to show the status, significance and methodology of the present study.The text is divided into five chapters. The first chapters covers two small ones. The fist component introduces the commen status of scholarship in early Song dynasty. Influenced by the study in the mid and late Tang dynasty, the condition of scholarship in early Song dynasty was still interested in hemenuetics in’Chunqiu’and’Zhouyi’, which was especially important to guwen writers in early Song dynasty. This thesis tries to show how the form of the scholarship changed, which reformed from’Zhushu’,’Yishu’ into ’Kouyi’,’Wenda’ and ’Jizhuan’ The second part introduces the condition of Ouyang Xiu’s scholarship. His most important and completed research was the book, the original meaning of Shijing, which influenced his students deeply in the mid Song dynasty.The second chapter is mainly referring to Ouyang’s rhetoric. The fist small chapter explains the reason why rhetoric of Ouyang becomes a conception. It also tries to express the relationship in between style, syntax and his rhetoric. The second small chapter some aspects of Ouyang’s rhetoric. Afer that, this part also aims to explain how the aspects were complished and what were did to scholar-bureaucratsNext three parts will argue about the scholarship and rhetoric of Ouyang in three three periods. The argument tries to unveil how the scholarship and rhetoric of Ouyang changed during the history, with influence to each other and were completed at last.Chapter three sets its argument on his scholarship and rhetoric inOuyang’s early age, when he came into Luoyang city and got an office work in the capital. During this time, he followed famous guwen writers in Luoyang, got the scholars’thinking about confusion books. While woking in the capital, he got so much courage to talk about politics, even challenging the emperor. At last he was exiled to Yiling in south china. During his first banishment, Ouyang began his research and found something suspicious in the confusion books.The next chapter concerns on Ouyang’s mid age, when he put himself into the revolution during Qingli times. Ouyang refered Fan Zhongyan as his model. His opinion in scholar and politics were also mature. So he got into the center of politics, criticized the government a. lot. Referring to the interaction in Ouyang and his partners, this chapter attends to study his thought in returning to the ancient times which were set up during Qingli times and his writing at the same time. So to get to the conclusion that Ouyang’s thought, his works and the image of the scholar-bureaucrats were combined together perfectly.The last chapter researches on the scholarship and rhetoric of Ouyang’s late age. The logic follows the period when Ouyang was banished for the second time and was called back to the capital to began his revolution during Jiayou times. This chapter is divided into two pieces. The first part searches into events happened before and after Jiayou the second year. So to express the complex politic condition during this time. This contrive in official bureaucracies did show the reason of Ouyang’s revolution. The second part roots in the defercece opinion about Taixue style in the imperial examinations which were hold by Ouyang during Jiayou times. This chapter tries to set analysis in the contrive between students in Taixue and Ouyang, an old person in Qingli times. At last, the conclusion is that Ouyang was not so exhausted in talking about philosophy, while the young students were in the contrary.The coclusion of this thesis is that Ouyang Xiu who stood on the boundary between the early and middle Song dynasty, his scholarship and rhetoric also kept the same condition. He inherited from his senior, illumined his followers. What kept in his scholarship and rhetoric during his life time was the essence about the image of scholar-bureaucrats in the early Song dynasty.
