Juliane House’s Translation Quality Assessment Model And Its Application To The English Translation Of Song Ci

Julian House’s translation quality assessment model is highly appreciated for itscomplete parameters, stable processes and flexible evaluative methods. However, theauthor finds that House excludes the poetic texts from the model. The feasibility andvalidity of the model on poem is still in doubt. Although she strongly insists that it alsocan be assessed with her model, she does not give enough empirical evidences.Domestic study on the applications of this model in Chinese to English translation isstill not enough. Relevant research, especially on the translation of poems still needsmore efforts. This thesis applies House’ model to the English translation of Yu Lin Lingin order to demonstrate its feasibility and validity in translation of Song Ci.At the beginning, the author introduces House’s translation quality assessmentmodel, relevant theories and backgrounds related to the study. Under the guidance ofcomprehensive methodology, including not only quantitative and qualitative methodsbut also macro and micro ways, the author revises and amends House’ model in order topursue a unity of subjectivity and objectivity in the assessing process. Then, the authorapplies the model to assessing Yu Xuanchong’s English version of Yu Lin Ling. Finally,the results manifest that the model is basically feasible and valid in English translationof Song Ci. During the evaluative processes, it’s discovered that translator’s translatingprocesses and choices will be reflected on the dimensions of field, tenor and mode tosome extent. In this sense, the thesis will be helpful for understanding the translator’stranslating processes and improving the translation capability. In a broader sense, it willhave a positive effect on the control of translation quality, regulation of translationmarket and development of translation criticism.
