To know the quality of translation is very important for translators to receive due acknowledgement, readers to choose good books to read, and for translation teachers to use suitable material to teach and learners to have the right examples to follow. Therefore it would be best if there is a model that can tell us how to get to know the quality of translations and fortunately, the translation quality assessment (TQA) model proposed by Juliane House is such a model. This thesis gives an in-depth analysis of House's model and uses it to assess the quality of eight randomly chosen English-Chinese translations taken from Reference News《(参考消息》), a very important and influential newspaper in China. Analysis of the model found that there are both merits and defects in that model. It is theoretically based and comprehensive but time-consuming in practical operation. Meanwhile, its parameters need to be reconsidered because some overlap one another. Moreover, the practical application of this model also faces limits due to its requirement of wholeness of textual features of the text to be analysed. In addition, application of the model in Reference News Translation from English into Chinese found that although there are some mis-matches and errors in the translations on Reference News, the ideational and interpersonal functional component of the ST are mostly kept, making the quality of them satisfactory.
