Recent years, large earthquakes happened all over the world and brought great damages tohuman lives and properties. Earthquake prediction, however, is still a difficult problem in Earthscience although the general public wants it to be solved urgently. For a long-time, every countryof the world has devoted itself to find out the mystery of earthquake, especially those countriesin the seismic zones. In the past several years, China has been attacked by Wenchuan earthquakeand Ya’an earthquake. Therefore, it’s of great significance to learn new theories and technologiesfrom other countries. The report introduces what is earthquake prediction, the classification of earthquakeprediction, the status quo of earthquake prediction both at home and abroad, goes on with thesignificance of earthquake prediction translation on the basis of the translation of parts ofTranslation of Advances in Earthquake Prediction: Research and Risk Mitigation(written byRagnar Stefánsson, Icelandic seismologist). It also gives a detailed analysis of the purpose andsignificance of the report, the translating process and some translating cases of the writer. The writer puts translating skills she has learned into practice in the process of translating,eg., for clarity of meaning, literal translation of acronyms; addition or deletion of punctuations, etc. She hopes her translation can enlighten Chinese geologists to learn from new findingsabroad and improve the development of Chinese earthquake prediction technologies.
