Wayne Wang(Wayne Wang,1949----) is a famous Chinese-American director, who was well-known to Chinese people since his film The Joy Luck Club in1993which was on a par with Ang Lee’s The Wedding Banquet. This movie received high praise in the movie circle after released, which also helped him lay the Chinese director position in Hollywood. A double dip of eastern and western culture and the experience of making eastern and western films gave him a coherent perspective. At the same time, his works to some extent also won the double recognition of both eastern and western audience.This thesis is divided into four chapters. The first chapter discusses the topics and themes of Wayne Wang’s films from the perspective of the cultural conflict and indentity in Chinese world and caring about lower middle class American living conditions. The second chapter discusses the narractive strategies of his films from four aspects:the selection and processing of space, the core of narractive-emotional conflict, the unique female perspective and the successful application of Hollywood narrative elements. The third chapter analyzes the av(audio and video) style of his films from the following aspects:the use of camera lens, the compesition design, light and color, voice, the use of music and sound etc. The fourth chapter tries to analyze the causes of the forming of his flim style by summarizing his creative experience. The paper also introduces Wayne Wang’s successful independent film-making and summarizes his creative experience. I hope that this paper could promote people’s cultural thinking to Chinese films and help Chinese films get more attention and recognition.
