Research On The News Headlines Translation From The Perspective Of Appraisal Theory

News headline summarizes the news content, main ideas, and conveys evaluation and stance. With Appraisal Theory as theoretical framework, this thesis has selected, annotated and calculated50pieces of news headlines concerning China-related topics from Reference News and their original English versions with the help of UAM Corpus Tool. By comparing the distributions of the evaluative resources in both headlines and exploring the translation of evaluative resources in terms of faithfulness, the thesis is intended to explore how news translators embed their attitude and stance to guide readers’ attitudinal positioning via translation of evaluative resources.The research reveals that the translated news headlines boast different number and distribution of evaluative resources. Specifically, in terms of Attitude, the translators have embedded and clarified their attitude and stance by adding, modulating attitudinal resources and changing the appraisal items. In terms of Engagement, the translators have obviously changed the dialogistic features. By turning monoglossia into heteroglossia or vice versa, the translators either open up or close down room for dialogue, which would influence readers’judgment about the credibility of the news. In terms of Graduation, the translators intensify or weaken their attitude via adding and reducing the use of Graduation resources.In the research, explanations are given to the unfaithful translations from the perspective of ideology and poetics. As is revealed, the news translators rewrite some evaluative resources in the news headlines in order to make them in line with the existent news writing practice, the ideology and expectations on the part of news agency, the target readers and the translator. By placing the translation study within the framework of Appraisal Theory, this paper verifies the applicability of Appraisal Theory to the translation study.
