The ensemble The Stars of Cosmic, the dissertation of the author for her Master Degree, focuses on gestures of the mixture of serial music and pentatonic scales. Combining the two materials mentioned above, the author attempts to explain her ideas of the composition by blending pentatonic and serial music’s material which interlocks with one another in the internal logic of the music.Influenced by Chinese poems and classical culture derived from ancient China, the atmosphere of this piece tries to picture a kind of style which comes from Chinese painting, showing the length of brushstrokes, the exaggeration, the matter’s transformation, and the gesture’s order. Specifically, the distance of brushstrokes in painting responses to the structure in music, and the exaggeration reflects the comparison in music, which refers to the contrasts between loud and quiet, or the layers of the presentation in the composition. In addition, as was mentioned above, the gesture of serial music regulates the material occurring in the piece as the music’s order. In other words, it arranges rhythms, pitches, timbres, and forms of harmonies, and dynamics.Aesthetically, the piece attempts to express traits within the Chinese culture, which is reflected by the mixture of serial music’logic and pentatonic scales. The key point about this combination is the way how to make this happen in the music. The author attempts to explore possibilities of this compositional mixture by analyzing the piece as the inception, resulting some special understanding and ideas.
