The thesis studies about the classical work Prince of the Devils from Schubert, the King of the Art Songs. Based on the author’s actual singing experiences, the thesis theoretically analyzes and ponders over the work on all counts. It firstly introduces Schubert’s lifetime as well as his composition features of the art songs, and then, combining the author’s own comprehension and experience of the singing performance, it analyzes the interpretation of the four roles in the song from different perspectives,.The song is one of the pieces that the author performed in his master degree graduation concert. The analysis of this song leads the author to a profounder understanding of the connotation and a more accurate and overall interpretation of the work. Being the epitome of art songs, the song shows not only Schubert’s superb techniques for creation but the perfect blend of poetry and melody as well as the voice and accompaniment. Through this thesis expounding, the author, on the one hand, expects us to know more about the music styles and singing techniques of Schubert’s vocal works. On the other hand, this thesis is expected to serve as a spur to get more people to know the charm of this art song from Schubert. With the number of vocal music learners increasing, elaboration of vocal works seem pretty necessary. This thesis, to a certain extent, plays a positive role of promoting contemporary vocal performing and teaching.
