Both Toru Takemitsu and Sofia Gubaidulina are great composers in20th Century. They are influenced by the western Avant-garde during the music production and they blend their own national music elements into their works which try to express their own religious belief. Simultaneously both of two great composers use symbolism during the production. Due to the difference of their national belief, Toru’s works embody the Zen of the East but Sofia’s works embody the suffering of the Western religion.In the case of two masterpieces-"Dream Windows" by Toru Takemitsu,"Seven Words" by Sofia Gubaidulina, which represent the symbolism in production, this essay is to analyze that composers utilize different musical language and compositional techniques which cause the different symbolism because of the different religious belief in east and west. Chapter one is a brief account of Toru Takemitsu and Sofia Gubaidulina’s whole life, how to form their compositional style and how symbolism affects them on music production. Chapter two is to analyze and summarize the symbolism in the "Dream Windows". Chapters three is to anaylze and summarize the symbolism in the "Seven Words". The last chapter is to summarize two different kinds of symbolism and to discuss the importance of symbolism beneath the different religious belief for the expression of personal belief and emotion during the production.
