An Intertextual Study Of Text Construction In Chinese And English Hard News Report Series

Discourse Analysis is an energetic branch of linguistics that has received continuous academicattention, as it probes the linguistic phenomenon from a brand-new perspective. Linguists givetheir priority to the discourse, the language in use, which is a hierarchical relation systemamazingly conducted by finite clause relations. By applying countable number of clauserelations, a macro-structure of discourse, the discourse pattern could achieve along with thecontribution by both the addresser and the addressee. Speaking of production and interpretationof language, as Hoey put it, could be seen as “a virtual dialogue” between the author and thereader. And that is the linguistic consensus people abide by in their communication and also thekey to a successful discourse.The Problem-Solution pattern, raised and proposed by Hoey in1983as the “minimumdiscourse pattern” catches eyeballs of increasing number of linguists and also shows theapplicability in various fields. But when goes to the news genre, there is little story told in thatfield. Intertexuality, another important concept given by Julia Kristeva also attracts the interestof scholars. While compared to topics such as discourse pattern and textual interaction, there isa comparative lack of attention to the application of intertextuality outside literature work.In this dissertation, the author tries to explore the structural and meaningful relations within theChinese and English hard news report series. The inter-discourse and intra-discourserelationships would be equally valued, as well as an even more larger discourse structure, aseries of discourse. Qualitative constructive analysis is conducted within20Chinese andEnglish hard news report series while the analysis should benefit a better understanding of theProblem-Solution pattern in certain field and also fills the gap of the exploration ofintertextuality in non-literature genre.The major findigs show that the Problem-Solution pattern could be fully applied with aparticular news genre: hard news report series, while analysis also shows some interestingfeatures compared to Hoey’s fundamental theory. And speaking of intertextuality, it showsboth in the extensive and parallel news report series, and in structure as long as meaning.
