This is a translation report on the fifth chapter of The Power of Self-Confidencewritten by Brian Tracy. In this book Brian Tracy taught the readers how to reinventthemselves and establish lifelong self-confidence through his life experiences. Self-confidence is not innate, it is the result of training and development. This translationreport was to study how to use the Catford’s translation theory as a guide and make theclosest equivalence to the original author by using a variety of effective translation skills,so that the Chinese readers could understand the original author’s intentions and benefit alot.This translation report has three chapters.Chapter One is the description of translation task. The translator briefly introducedthe background of the translation task and the characteristics of the task.Chapter Two is the description of translation process. First of all, it is how todetermine the content of the translation practice. Secondly, it is how to translate. Finally,it is the review of the translation.Chapter Three is the theoretical guidance of the translation practice and caseanalysis. The whole process of translation practice was under the guidance of theCatford’s translation theory which included translation equivalence and translation shifts.The translator also used a variety of translation skills, such as: amplification, omission,literal translation and free translation, combination, conversion and inversion. At thesame time, the translator also conducted a related case analysis.The last part is the conclusion of the translation practice. After this task, thetranslator made a lot of new understandings of translation. It is that a good translatorneeds solid bilingual quality. What’s more, as a translator, one must have the sense ofresponsibility. And then, one can make good translation.
