A Research On The E-C Translation Of Novels From The Perspective Of Translation Shifts

In the linguistic community,it is popularly agreed that the English language differs from the Chinese language in many ways,and that the conversion from one language into another is the key concern for scholars in the field of translation theories and practice.In his Translation: A Course Book,Catford puts forward the view that the essence of translation lies in the achievement of equivalence between texts in different languages,and that level shifts and category shifts are two major approaches to the achievement of equivalence.According to Catford,level shift refers the fact that sentences in one language can be changed into phrases or even words,and vise versa.Category shift refers to that fact that language constituent of a category can be changed into a constituent of another category.Category shift includes structure shift,unit shift,(word)class shift,etc.;it offers a solid basis for language conversion in the field of translation theories and practice.After detailed description and careful examination of Catford's viewpoints on translation shifts,the author chooses the two Chinese versions(Wangfang's version and Song Zhaolin's version)of Wuthering Hights as research subjects and intends to examine the stylistic and methodological differences between the two versions in such translation shifts like structure shift,unit shift,(word)class shift,in the hope of offering reference for translation appreciation and translation practice.The research indicates that Wangfang tends to focus on formal equivalence between the of original text and the target text in her translation,whereas Song Zhaolin adopts flexible approaches to category shifts in his translation,taking more attention into his attention of target language characteristics and target readers' aesthetic experiences.This may offer reference to translation appreciation and translation practice.
