Joanne Kathleen Rowling is a world-renowned authoress in the twenty-first century.After her Harry Potter series, she anonymously published a detective novel called TheCuckoo’s Calling. While published, it attracted tremendous attention around the worldand gained significant reputation from the readers all over the world.In this thesis, It mainly focus on the study of J.K. Rowling’s writing style in TheCuckoo’s Calling. Under the tendency of diversification in the detective novel, J.K.Rowling still generates a huge response by using the traditional creation. Therefore, in away, the study of the detective novel of J.K. Rowling is a kind of exploring the writingstyle of classic detective novel. At the same time, J.K. Rowling comply with thedevelopment of the novel. In this context, J.K. Rowling combined with hard-boiledreasoning and suspense reasoning based on the main rules of classic detective writingmethod. The thesis is focused on the four parts:analysis of the writing theme, narrativemethod, characters and the suspense plot setting, through which we can summarize herwriting style.This thesis consists of three parts, namely, introduction, main body, and conclusion.The first part is the introduction part, in order to build the basic knowledge of theauthor and detective novel, J.K. Rowling’s life and her works are briefly introduced.The second part is the main body, which includes three chapters:In the first chapter, the author represents a twists and turns novel by skillfully usingdesign of the narrators and timings.The application of detective time in the novel should become one of the artisticfeature in the detective fiction. Paying close attention and studying the narrative time willlead us to have a deeply research on the internal mechanism o f the detective novel. Thiswill help the readers to have more accurately, more profound and more comprehensiveunderstanding of detective novel.In the second chapter, it analyzed the unique artistic writing technique of characters.The image analysis of the criminal and the detective Strike and the analyze of theircriminal phycology as well as Strike’s investigate methods.From the perspective of the content of detective fiction, some of the basic charactersof human being are truly reflected in the detective novel, Which lead people find a shocking problem through interpreting the novel, the human beings seem to have acommon human nature--man is born “evil”. The representation of the light of variouscriminal faces is not to show the brutal and bloody, but through the display the “evil”side of human nature, people can prompt human self-reflection and self accused of socialvalues.The third chapter is mainly study on the suspense constructing techniques in thenovel. The authoress J.K. Rowling setted a perfect “locked room” murder then draw forththe big conspiracy from the dead. The author made great use of article structure and theplot setting to hide the certain facts deliberately, which make the readers have a greatsense of astonishment. This is why the novel The Cuckoo’s Calling is loved by readers.The third part is the conclusion part. The conclusion sums up J.K. Rowling’s artisticachievement. The creation of modern detective novel reveals some social issues ofcurrent society. It has social and realistic importance.
