Narrative Research On Chinese Costume Detective Films

In the diversified development of genre film,costume detective film rooted in Chinese traditional culture combines the cultural symbols of the nation and the narrative features of the western crime film,and has formed a set of it's own narrative paradigm.Costume detective film is a subtype of the crime film in nature.In the west,the detective film has already developed into a mature film type and won a number of loyal audience.Case literature based on ancient Chinese feudal system pays attention to sensibility,human feelings and patriarchal ethics.It and cognitive science,logical reasoning,which is characterized by the western industrial civilization,fall into two kinds of values.This also led to the popularity of martial arts novels and the lack of the costume detective literature.Compared to Europe and the United States,China's detective culture started late,and technical means are relatively weak.Both literature and TV dramas lack creative enthusiasm.Costume detective film has its artistic charm and cultural cohesion.Appealing suspense,intricate plot,unpredictable criminal skills,test of wisdom and courage and collision between thinking and logic have become magic weapons to make detective film shine in the film history.Detective film is different from the horror film in sensory stimulation.This pleasant sensation comes from people's curiosity and the dangerous and exciting process of pursuing the truth.Its value kernel is the process of revealing the truth,rather than how to bring the killer to justice;it is a dual-game between puzzle maker and solver.In this process,sagacity showed by solver and great awakening when the puzzle is solved are enough to meet the audience's psychological demands.Detective film focuses on the relationship between individual and social history;through the analysis on the criminal mechanism in different social contexts to reveal the human nature and criticize the society.It has profound social value and historical criticism.Its unique style features also make more and more people flock to it.Chinese costume detective film needs to learn from the west,not only the commercial mechanism,but also the deep cultural expression and spiritual transmission to form the image style that conforms to the oriental aesthetics and the nation's unique narrative encoding.In the long history of the development of human society,the function of narration is everywhere.Human beings convey emotion and mind through narration.The inheritance of history and the transmission of civilization can't do without the narration,to master the ability of narration is a basic and important skill of human action.As David Bonwell and Christian Thompson said: “Perhaps narrative is a basic way for people to understand the world”.From this point of view,the research on the narrative of Chinese costume detective film has a certain practical significance on the development and perfection of the theory of genre film and the guidance of creative practice.In this paper,through the definition on the concept of Chinese costume detective film,the author distinguishes it from the confusing concept in traditional crime films,suspense films,detective films and martial arts films.Analyzing the emergence of suspense,the application of cliffhanger,the process of reasoning,information suppression and delay etc.To explore the narrative strategies of costume detective film,analyzing the narrative structure of costume detective film and grasping the characteristics and functions of narrative characters by applying Grey Maas' matrix and Francois Jost's narratology theory to explain the unique expressive force of Chinese costume detective film.
