As the outstanding literary works in21stcentury, Harry Potter series have been popularwith readers and all the rage. At the same time, the works also become the critical object ofmany literature critics and scholars. Critics interpret Harry Potter series from multi-angles,but only a few researches focus on the perspective of fantasy features. The fantasy elementsand its characteristics displayed by Harry Potter series make the novels representative asfantasy and have certain research value. Therefore, this thesis is going to do relevant researchinto the fantasy features in Harry Potter series, exploring the sources, presentation andpractical significance of fantasy elements. The thesis is divided into five parts.The introduction part makes a brief introduction to J.K.Rowling and her Harry Potterseries. Then critical comments of the series both at home and abroad are introduced. In theend, it gives a brief introduction to fantasy.Chapter One is concerned with the sources of fantasy elements in Harry Potter seriesfrom the perspective of the historical background, Rowling’s personal experience and herinterests in traditional European culture. Simultaneously, the influences of these three aspectson Rowling’s creation are explored as well.Chapter Two is the presentation of fantasy elements in Harry Potter series in detail,including the muggle world and the wizarding world. Next, the presentation is furtherexplained by summarizing the passageway between the two worlds.Chapter Three discusses the realistic significance of fantasy elements shown in HarryPotter series. It concludes that the wizarding world is a parody of the muggle world. Thepositive values involved in fantasy are explored, too.The conclusion part indicates the profound realistic significance created by Harry Potterseries as a fantasy. The series reflect the author’s values, and reflect the social valueorientation.
