English fantasy novel has been a hot topic among readers all over the world and researchers from academic circle recently for the wide-spread reputation of Harry Potter series, which are authored by British female writer J.K.Rowling(1965-)and translated into China since 2000,setting off a countrywide “Harry Potter” mania. There are two representative Chinese versions of Harry Potter: Ma Ainong and Ma Aixin’s version which is published by People’s Literature Publishing House, and Peng Chien-wen’s version which is patronized by Taiwan Crown Culture Publishing Cooperation. This paper is conducted to make a comparative study on two Chinese versions of “Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows”,the final volume of the series,to explore the similarities and differences from the perspective of translation poetics. This paper draws on Lefevere’s(1992)translation poetics theory to analyze how poetics affects translation activities from macro and micro level respectively through descriptive method, revealing that poetics plays an active role in translating texts with English fantasy characteristics.Three research questions will be answered with abundant examples: 1)On the macro level, how does dominant poetics of different regions influence translators’ choices? 2)On the micro level, how does translation poetics manipulate translators’ preference on translation strategies when rendering this volume? 3)How does translators of the two versions reproduce the features of English fantasy novel? The research finds out that, from macro level, translation activities of translators of the two Chinese versions are both influenced by their social-cultural,historical backgrounds,as well as their personal translation ideas. From micro level, the effect of poetics received by the translators of the two versions primarily reflects on the language features, literary devices, prototypical characters, and cultural situation of the translated texts, when translating,Peng Chien-wen inclines to adopt the strategy of domestication while Ma Ainong and Ma Aixin prefer the combination of domestication and foreignization. In terms of the reproduction of the fantasy features,Peng’s version utilizes the strategy of free translation while Ma’s version employs literal translation as the main strategy and free translation as the complementary.
