My translation mission is Two on a Tower written by famous British writer Thomas Hardy. This novelconsists of41chapters and is translated by7translators. The author of the present report is responsible forthe translation of Chapters26-31.In the process of translation, the translator applied Nord’s Model for Translation-oriented TextAnalysis to guide the translation. This thesis consists of three parts. The first part is the source text, the second part is the translation textand the third part is the report on the translation. The third part can be divided into the following foursections: the first is project introduction, including source and selection of the task, brief introduction of theauthor and the source text, and the translation brief; the second is about the main theoretical basis, namely,Nord’s Model for Translation-oriented Text Analysis, including a discussion on Extratextual factors,Intratextual factors and a functional hierarchy of translation problems; the third section is the description oftranslation process, including translation preparations, translation difficulties and settlement, versionpolishing; and the last section is concluding part, including the translator’s understanding of translation, especially literary translation, from the task and problems remaining to be solved. In this thesis the author of the present report mainly discusses translation of the religious information, the rhetorical devices and how to deal with language features of the characters. To solve the problems, methods such as literal translation plus annotation, domestication are adopted. After finishing thetranslation mission, I realize that translation is by no means an easy task. At the same time, I understandthat a qualified translator must possess abilities of different aspects such as: solid basis of both Chinese andEnglish, abundant knowledge of different subjects, rigorous attitude of work and excellent teamwork spirit.
