A Report On The Translation Of Two On A Tower (Chapter19-24)

The co-translation task of Two on a Tower is shared by seven translators. The task from chapters19to24is assigned to me. This work is written by the English novelist, Thomas Hardy. With the astronomicalresearch and religion belief, the author sets the development of love story as the main line of this novelfrom the beginning to the end, whose purpose is to criticize the conservatives of religion and theconventions of society. The language of the novel is rather difficult with distinctive colloquial feature fornumerous dialogues. On the basic theory of Christiane Nord, namely, translation-oriented text analysis, thetranslator applies various skills to deal with the translation difficulties. And the translator uses thetranslation strategy of foreignization in general, which helps not only maintain the features of the originaltext but also give the readers a chance to appreciate the culture and style of the original.The report is composed of following three parts: the source text of English, the Chinese version andthe report of translation. In addition, the report of translation consists of four components:(1)the taskintroduction, including source and selection of the task, brief introduction of the author and the source text,and the translation brief;(2) the main theoretical basis, including Nord’s model for translation-oriented textanalysis, and a discussion on extratextual factors, extratextual factors and a functional hierarchy oftranslation problems;(3) translation process, including translation preparations, translation difficulties, andmodification of the translation;(4) conclusion, including the experiences from the task and limitations.
