The concept of savoring was first mentioned by Bryant and Veroff (1989) in the4-factor model of perceiving-controlling of life, it refers to capacities to attend to, appreciate, and enhance the positive experiences or the processes underlying those capacities. As a part of positive psychology, savoring has similarities and differences with positive experience. When one savors, one is aware of pleasure and appreciates the positive feelings one is experiencing. But by experiencing pleasure, one does not necessarily savor. Attentive and appreciative awareness of the pleasure must also occur or we would not consider the experience to involve savoring. For the time being, there are few experimental research about savoring. The research of savoring mainly use the paradigm developed by Quidbach(2010) and lack other experimental research. Hence, we want to explore a new experimental method, while discuss materialism as an impact factor of savoring. There are two studies in this paper. In study1, we use questionnaire survey to investigate the relationship among savoring, materialism and happiness; In study2, we use experimental method to explore the influence of materialism priming on savoring behavior(listening to music). The results of the research show that a significant negative correlation exists between materialism and savoring and also exists between materialism and happiness. Meanwhile, the dimension of savoring the moment completely mediated the associations of materialism between happiness. In addition, the priming of materialism make individual spend less time on listening to music and obtain less enjoyment from the experienceComprehensive research presents that materialism may reduce individuals’ savoring behavior and ruins the pleasure people get from the positive event. That is to say materialism makes people savor less positive experience and it may be one of the reasons that the individuals with a higher level of materialism have a lower level of subjective happiness.
