Study On The Book Design Of "a Picture Album;Historical Materials Of Wei Lanfang’s Theatrical Performances"

In2004," A Picture Album：Historical Materials of Mei Lanfang’sTheatrical Performances " won the only “Gold Award” in the selectionof "the Most Beautiful Book in the World" held in Leipziger Buchmesse,German. At the same time, it won the “Benny Award”—the highest honorin global printing industry. All the judges have given high evaluationon this book, and called it “perfect”.This paper gives a specific analysis of the book “A Picture Album：Historical Materials of Mei Lanfang’s Theatrical Performances” from thevisual, material and technology aspects, and on this basis, it compareswith the other winning works of "the Most Beautiful Book in the World",to study why it was appraised as the "Gold Award". In the analysis, theauthor starts from the correlation between opera aesthetic and bookaesthetic, to explore how this book conveys the cultural connotation fromits design. This paper comes to the conclusion: the success of the bookdesign of " A Picture Album:Historical Materials of Mei Lanfang’sTheatrical Performances" lies in that, it combines traditional languagearts with modern technique subtly, and to present the charm of Chinesetraditional culture by modern design means. Through studying this book,the author hopes to find some ways to better learn from the book designof traditional culture books, and to explore her own way forself-development.
