The greeting is one of the most frequently used verbal forms, people in the process of communication,plays a very important role in any nation’s language communication, also reflects the different culturalconnotations and communication habits of various ethnic groups, improper use of greetings are theobstacles to communication between the two communication. Since the reform and opening up, Chineserapid economic development, comprehensive national strength increasing, more and more people in theworld are starting to learn Chinese. While the process in the foreign Chinese learners in cross-culturalcommunication, because of the difference between the Chinese greeting complexity and culture caused thegreeting of pragmatic failure of all kinds, and in cross cultural communication first involves is the nameand greeting etiquette, the cross-cultural communication smoothly caused great impact. Therefore, theintercultural communicative competence in order to improve the Chinese learners, the pragmatic failure ofgreeting and foreigners to understand research and skilled use of greeting this most basic speech problemsis imminent.This paper first reviews the Chinese greeting language ontology research as well as the ChineseEnglish Contrastive Study of greetings in academic circle, the meaning and classification of greeting,related concepts and cross-cultural communication and pragmatic failures in cultural, are described. Andthen to the English speaking learners of Chinese as an example, analyzes the performance and failurereason of greeting pragmatic failure. Finally, has carried on the exploration to the learning method to avoid the greeting of pragmatic failure, and put forward some suggestions.
