Confucianism got a flourish in Later Han Dynasty, Fan Ye, who regarded Confucianism as dominantthought, created a large number of typical images of Confucian scholar with a variety of artistic means andevaluation criterions in Houhan Shu. The study on Confucian scholar images of Houhan Shu has importantliterature value. The paper takes four chapters to analyse and investigate.The first chapter, Confucian scholar definition and general situation of Confucianism in Later HanDynasty. This chapter will define the Confucian scholar and introduce the Confucianism general situationin Later Han Dynasty. Through the discussion of the definition of Confucian scholar and their the economicstatus, social identity and personality character, combined with the typical characteristics of knowledgeable,minor in divination and advocating honor mentioned in Houhan Shu, the Later Han Dynasty Confucianismhistory is roughly divided as reviving, flourishing and decline three phases, in convenient to learn the socialthought background of Confucian scholar, and it is better to understand Later Han Dynasty Confucianscholar images of shaped in Houhan Shu.The second chapter, classification of Confucian scholar images. Combined with Rulin Liezhuan andConfucian scholar records, Confucian scholar images in Houhan Shu are divided into various groupsaccording to different criteria. Based on Confucian scholar individual activities and its main effect onConfucian culture, it can be divided into Mingjing, Governor and Experience of Dao; On the basis ofConfucian scholar’s character, it can be divided into two classes:honest and upright scholar and effeminatescholar; According to the different attitude to life of Confucian scholar, it can be divided into the pursuit ofmaterial life and adhereing to the spirit world. Three types present the overall condition of Confucianscholar group in Later Han Dynasty with overlapping each other.The third chapter, creation of Confucian scholar images.This chapter will study variety show in theform of Confucian scholar images in Houhan Shu, including introduction of image accomplishment, detailConfucianism activity and portray Confucian scholar’s character. There are introduction of Confucianscholar classics quality, learning spirit and moral character accomplishment, and detail presentation ofdebate between the Confucian scholars, Confucian scholar language works, Five Classics note, and Confucianism teaching activities in Houhan Shu, besides, the Book is also good at shaping Confucianscholar character through typical events, language and the specific details, which shows the specialimage-shaping method and unique charm of Confucian scholar.The forth chapter, Fan Ye’s view on Confucian scholar. This chapter will discuss Fan Ye’s attitude toConfucian scholar and Confucianism on the basis of comments to Confucian scholar in Houhan Shu.Influenced by family tradition, Fan Ye promoted Confucianism. He regarded “benevolence”,“justice” and“wisdom” as positive principle, focused on comments to Confucianism achievement and characterpersonality.“Ming Ru”,“Tong ru” and “Da Ru” are originated from him. His ideal Confucian scholarmanner is fully explained by “Chun Ru”, Zheng Xuan. During Confucianism declining age, through FanYe’s positive attitude to Later Han Dynasty Jing Xue, negative attitude to Divination and do his best to savethe Confucianism declined, it is easily to find that his sense of mission to Confucianism and ambition tosave Confucianism, which shows obviously positive significance.Study of Confucian classics got a most flourishing period in Later Han Dynasty. As inheritance ofConfucian classics and practitioners of the Confucian ideal, Confucian scholars acted as different roles indifferent periods, and made significant contributions to society. The ideological characteristics, behaviorand value pursuit of Confucian scholars in Later Han Dynasty, have important influence to descendent. It isinevitable choice to carry out further research for academic development and cultural inheritance.
