Translation Of Fuzzy Language In Bian Cheng In The Light Of Reception Aesthetics

Fuzzy language is of great semantic and aesthetic values as it can offer great space for the readers’ imagination. Chinese writers are especially good at employing fuzzy expressions to create aesthetic beauty. Therefore, it is of great significance to the translation of Chinese literary works to study translation of fuzzy language in literary works.This thesis has conducted a study on translation of fuzzy language in literary works from the perspective of Reception Aesthetics. The author of this thesis first gives a definition of fuzzy language to be discussed in this thesis and a detailed introduction to the aesthetic effects of fuzzy language. Then she introduces main ideas of Reception Aesthetics to discuss the significance of fuzzy language in literary works and the principles for the translation of fuzzy language. On this basis, the author conducts a comparative study of the translation of fuzzy language in Bian Cheng in its two English versions, i.e. The Border Town by Gladys Yang and Border Town by Jeffrey C. Kinkley. For convenience, the author classifies fuzzy language in Bian Cheng from the rhetorical perspective and then discusses the translation of them category by category. The author concludes that in the translation of fuzzy language, the translator first of all as the special "reader" of the source text must enlarge his own horizon of expectations to achieve fusion of horizons with fuzzy language in the source text so as to understand what the original author wants to express with fuzzy language. Then the translator as the author of the translation should consider the target readers so that he can produce a comprehensible translated version that reproduces the aesthetic effects of fuzzy language as much as possible. At last, the author of this thesis points out the enlightenment on Chinese literature’s going global gained from the study.
