Pan Xizeng(Ad1476-1532), a poet in Ming Dynasty, whose literary name is"Zhonglu", and who styled himself as "Zhujian", was born in Jinhua, ZhejiangProvince. He suffered ups and downs in his career. Being silent and thoughtful, hestated outright and dared to remonstrate and his poets are full of uprightness, whichwas praised by the people of the time. In the academic circles, studying on PanXizeng or his poetry are very few, only a few of poets are used as examples in someworks and his biographies are scattered in several local chronicles and ancientencyclopedias, lacking of systematic study and research, which leaves a large researchspace.The thesis comprises two parts. The first part, in addition to the introduction andconclusion, including three chapters, is the exposition part. Introduction sectionbriefly summarizes the life experience of Pan Xizeng as well as the purpose,significance, and the overall framework of this thesis. The first chapter researches thefamily and life of Pan Xizeng. He was born in a scholarly family, whose ancestors arehonest and incorruptible officials who dared to remonstrate. In his early year, PanXizeng’s father dead, he studied hard for being an official. He was upright but alwayshad to face a rocky road in his career. His poetry records the experiences and feelingsin different periods. Chapter Two discusses Pan’s poetic thoughts, which was greatlyaffected by Li Dongyang and his family. Opposing the mechanical simulation as wellas advocating revealing true sentiments and poets in the flourishing tang dynasty aresimilar to Li’s thoughts, while because of his personal experiences, worshiping Du Fuand other reasons, he also valued the narrative function of poetry, which was unlikethe overall poetic thought of his contemporaries. The third chapter, first, gives anoverview of Zhujian Set, containing investigation of different directories andcomparison of different versions; then studies his poetic themes and features. Hispoetry has a wide range of topics, involving in all aspects, while different theme hasits own characteristics. In all of his poetic topics, making friends, trips, chantingpoetry are comparably more than others. Generally speaking, there are threecharacteristics of his poems: intrinsic righteousness, pristine nature and skilledtechniques.The main work of the second part is the collation and annotation of PanXizeng ’s poems. Based on the copy of Series of Sequel Jinhua, the poems, in whichallusions, historical facts, names, places are annotated, are collated with the copy ofComplete Library in Four Divisions. The aim of this thesis is to fill gaps by studyingthe life and poetry of Pan Xizeng and collating and annotating his poems.
