In thefifties or sixties last century, domestic animation industry has made brilliant achievements in demonstratingChinese folk style.Many works produced by Shanghai Art and Film studio made a hit in many international film festivals and won high-profile prizes consecutively.Consequently they were dubbed Chinese genre.Classic pieces with distinct Chinese folk style like "Havoc in the Heaven""Conceited General"" Affection for the Landscape""Shepherd’s Flute""The Tadpole’s Adventure to Find Mom" absorb and employ traditional Chinese folk artistic elements in their expression,which give audience a freshness with their intense oriental culture.These are pioneer attempts en rout for nationalized style. However, due to the economic reform, many animationists who preceded creativity to market got lost. Up to ninties, Chinese Genre plunged to stagnation under the impact of market economy. In the meantime, Chinese genre slowly disappeared from the international arena. In contrast, Frech animation has been playing a vital role in the development history of world animation through its unique french quality. Because of that, it garnered significant prizes again and again for its outstanding representation of combining artistic and commercial elements. Moreover,French animation stands out among the commercial animations produced by Japan and US in and by itself characteristic.As the Chinese saying goes "Only what is national can become the world’s treasure".To regain the past glory, we must insist on nationalization and animation have to take root in the soil of traditional culture. In addition, only if development and innovation is made on conventions and new techniques and experience are learned from other countries, can we hammer out our own path and revitalize Chinese animation industry based on brand-new creation guideline.This paper traces the histories of Chinese and French animation development from the early period, compare two symbolic works namely " Havoc in the Heaven" and "Belleville Rendez-vous" in term of specific works and their production guideline, contrast the once booming Chinese animation and the later-on thriving French animation, trace the artistic vestige in the whole course of each nation’s animation development with a view to summarizing the successful lessons and providing experience as well as guidance for the research and study of Chinese animation. |
