Xu Tang(822-?), word Wen Hua, Xuan Zhou Jing County (now part of An Hui)people, a poet of the late Tang Dynasty. The poet’s main life experience referringto “Tang Zhi Yan” Volume IV and Volume VIII,“Bei Meng Suo Yan” Volume II,“Tang Yu Lin” Volume VII,“Poetry Chronicle” Volume seventy,“Tang giftedschool letterhead” Volume VIIII and other ancient books.“Full Tang”collectsXu Tang’s poems and divides them into two volumes. This can find in “Full Tang”from Volume Liu Ling San to Volume Liu Ling Si. Xu Tang wrote155poems in total.His poems are Five Seven Poems except one is Residual Sentence.“Full Tang”collects Xu Tang’s one inscription (and order) which can find in Volume Ba YiEr.Xu Tang’s life experience had more ups and downs which could be see from thepoet’s official experience, travel experience and communication experience andso on. From the perspective of the poet’s official experience, the poet passedthe exam when he was about fifty years old. Before this, the poet was thwartedin the examination field for about three decades. From the perspective of thepoet’s travel experience, the poet went to Qin long area in the medium for threeor four years (AD850years). Then he went to east side area in the medium forfour years (AD850years) to the medium for six years (AD852years). XianTong nine years (AD868years) to eleven years (AD870years) Xu Tang onceagain roamed Qin Long and Guan Nei Dao. From the perspective of the poet’scommunication experience, the poet met some friends, officials, monks and forgeda profound friendship in the process of traveling the frontier. At the same time,the poet was deeply influenced by Confucian thought. When the poet was frustrated,he was also influenced by the Buddhist “static back view”,“world view” andthe Taoist “doing nothing” thought. So the poet started to pursue a state ofpeace and quiet on the spirit.From the perspective of emotional connotation, Xu Tang’s poems mainlyexpressed four kinds of feelings: First is the persistent official situation,two is the lonely sorrow journey of love, three is the artless human relations,four is the deepest distant homesickness.From the perspective of artistic characteristics, Xu Tang’s poems mainly hadfour features: Firstly, the language of Xu Tang’s poems was full of the sense of colour, hierarchy and picture. Secondly, Xu Tang’s poems applied rhetoricfreely,such as contrast, exaggeration, antithesis and allusion and so on. Thirdly,the images of Xu Tang’s poems often with a deep emotional tone, such as the imageof the sun, white hair and the sail and so on. Lastly, the poet was influencedby the background of the times and his own experiences, his poems had the melancholyloneliness style.
