The Post-colonial Writing Research Of "Oscar And Lucinda"

Peter Carey is a famous contemporary writer of Australia. He created a lot ofpostcolonial literature works."Oscar and Lucinda" is the most famous postcolonialwriting text of all his novels which is not only conveyed strong post-colonial historicalview but also included valuable significance in the post-colonial writing environment.This paper selects Peter Carey′s novel “Oscar and Lucinda” which won theBooker Prize in1988, analyses the post-colonial writing tendency. Firstly it expoundsthe presentation of post-colonial writing “Oscar and Lucinda”. Because of thehybridity feature of the post-colonial writing, the first part expresses from threeaspects----the identity of the characters, the plot layout of the novel and the hybridityof narrative language. The mixed identities of Oscar, Jeffries and Lucinda made themin a certain condition of contradiction which structured by themselves, so their finalresult must be tragical. The plot which spliced together like a kaleidoscope show a realword colonized by empires, and the hybridity of narrative language explained thepurpose that the colonized people would subvert empires′mainstreamed discourses.Secondly, the paper analyses the causes of the post-colonial writing which containedPeter Carey′s unusual experience, complex special social and historical backgroundand the strongly influence of Australia literary tradition. Finally, the paper inquiresinto the valuable significance of ideas and art. This novel is not only criticizes thoughtof patriarchal society and exposes historical lies of empires, but also for reality, expectsthe intergration of diversified culture. He pointed out that only giving recognition oftheir own national history and culture would build independent identity of it, thenusher in a harmonious society of Australia consist of different culture,and even thecommon development of global culture.
