A Study Of The Eventualization Historical Writing In Peter Carey’s Novels

Peter Carey is good at exploring Australian rich historical resources and using historical materials in his novels.Under the guidance of causal necessity and purpose theory,the writing style of traditional historical texts and literary classics show the characteristics of "de-eventualization",and regard history as the same,closed and static.Peter Carey’s historical writing restored the contingency,heterogeneity and generative of history in an eventualization way,and rethink the Australian history.This thesis mainly analyzes the event characteristics of Carey’s historical writing from the following aspects:First,events occur in multidimensional relations,which is the result of the joint action of many complex factors.Through making a comparative analysis of the differences between the presentation of causality in traditional historical writing and Peter Carey’s,this thesis finds that Australian traditional historical texts and literary classics often establish a one-to-one corresponding causality between events,through the screening mechanism,and connect a series of events with the causal chain,so that the process of history presents the characteristics of inevitability.Carey broke the continuous causal chain between events from the three stages of cause,process and result.Through the attention and exploration of accidental events,Carey weakened the causal relationship between events and broke the causal inevitability of traditional historical writing.Second,events are singularity.Through comparative analysis,this thesis finds that the traditional historical writing,under the action of teleology,has the essentialism characteristics of historical events and historical figures,weaving events into the established cultural structure and changing its chaotic original state.Peter Carey portrayed some unstructured and unconventional characters in his works.Through the writing of personal history,the history of Australian minorities can be reproduced and the national history can be rewritten.By transforming the narrative subject,Carey transforms the narrator of history into the virtual witness,restores the original field of historical events,and restores the confusion and heterogeneity of history.Third,events are generative.This thesis finds that the traditional historical writing has the characteristics of static and closed.The characters and events in history are endowed with definite historical significance and historical value.Through the interweaving of truth and fiction,Peter Carey stimulated the tension between narrative and the events narrated,and restored the openness of history.His novels construct a multi voice world with distinctive dialogism,which makes history and its significance in continuous generation.Fourth,Carey’s eventualization historical writing has theoretical value and practical significance.Peter Carey rethinked and practiced the possibility of literature connecting real history in his novels.At the same time,this eventualization historical writing also points to an inclusive construction of national identity.
