This article consists of the translation part and the analysis part. The translation part mainly involves teaching as a cultural activity and Japan’s approach to the improvement of classroom teaching. And the analysis part mainly discusses the challenges and approaches in social science academic translation from three aspects. Academic translation has high demands for translator. It takes great responsibility for conveying advanced cultural beliefs to targeted readers in other cultural backgrounds. In other words, apart from careful selection of words, academic translation also needs the translator to concisely express contents that conform to targeted readers’reading habits. Therefore, good understanding and accurate interpretation of the original text is of great importance before translating academic materials. Academic translation usually involves certain specific areas, so having a basic knowledge of relevant background is vital to ensure the quality of translation work. On the other hand, clarifying the logical relations in context is also needed in academic translation, because the logical relations connect all the information the writer intended to convey. If the translator couldn’t dig out the core and grasp the very essence of the sentence, the incidental part would be put before the fundamental contents in translation. Besides that, the smooth writing is also crucial in academic translation. Although the academic style restricts the wording of translation work, a good translator is able to set himself or herself free by offering flexible interpretation in his or her work. This article aims at discussing some common issues in academic translation in terms of the understanding of the original text, the logical relations and the smoothness of writing in target language, during which some examples in the translation practice and guiding theories will also be involved in discussion.
