Translation Strategies For Logical Relations In Social Science Text Under The Guidance Of Functional Equivalence Theory

In this report,the source text adversarial decision-making is excerpted from the book When Mathematics Goes to the Polls written by Vicen? Torra.The author of this book describes how to solve the problems in the decision making by mathematical models.The fifth chapter “Adversarial decision-making” of this book proposes the static game,the dominant and Pareto optimal,the mixed strategy utility,the Nash equilibrium of the double game,the zero-sum game,and the existence of the Nash equilibrium in the opponent's decision.The source text is classified as a kind of social science text,the purpose of which is to popularize the knowledge,thus,the language of the source text tends to be accurate and rigorous.Moreover,the translation of the social science text with complex logic is of great difficulty,on the one hand,the definitions to some words cannot be found accurately in the dictionary,on the other hand,the semantic field formed by concepts is also a difficult point.The translator searched on the CNKI and found that more and more studies related to the translation of social science text without theoretical guidance have been done in recent years.Therefore,this report aims to translate the logical relations under the guidance of functional equivalence theory and propose three translation strategies,which can provide the reference for the translation practice for further study.This report is divided into four chapters,and uses case analysis to study the translation of logical relationship in the text.The report firstly introduces the source text of this translation practice and the process of translation practice.The second chapter focuses on the functional equivalence theory and its translation standards in four aspects.The third chapter introduces three translation strategies of logical relations in social science texts under the guidance of functional equivalence theory,including amplification,literal translation and restructuring.This report found that different translation strategies should be adopted in different situations.For example,if the source text with contrast relationship has no clear relational words,the logical relationship must be expressed by using the amplification to add appropriate relationalwords.In the same way,literal translation can accurately translate the terminology in the text and convey the original information.Furthermore,restructuring is selected to reassemble the complicated information and sentence structure in order to highlight the logical relationship of some complex sentences.In the fourth chapter,the translator summarizes the translation project,and reflects on its limitations and findings.
