Translation Strategies For Implicit Logical Relations In EPS Text From The Perspective Of Communicative Translation

This translation report selects Chapter 11 from Meteorology Today,written by Donald Ahrens,as research corpus.As an English popular science book,Meteorology Today has been selling well since its publication in 1994.And consequently,the book has not only influenced lots of meteorological researchers but also helped the common readers who are interested in science to widen their meteorology knowledge.Meteorology Today which covers twenty chapters from meteorology to geoscience examines the fundamental principles of meteorological activities and the dynamicity of weather events that have caused great influence on people’s life.Chapter 11 examines the typical weather phenomena associated with cold fronts and warm fronts.Based on Peter Newmark’s communicative translation,this report explores how to reproduce implicit logical relations in EPS text.To be specific,implicit logical relations found in vocabulary,phrases,sentences,syntactic relevance,and between the main clause and phrases will be discussed in the case study.Furthermore,the report mainly analyzes the translation strategies for implicit logical relations.By doing this,the translator hopes that the translation practice report can promote the development of EPS translation.Several conclusions are drawn from this report.Firstly,implicit logical relations,such as causality,relationships among phrases,non-predicates,attributive clauses,and contexts,can be found in lexical cohesion.Secondly,translation skills and strategies should be employed in delivering implicit logical relations,and appropriate adjustments should be made according to different ways in expressing logical meaning of the source text.Thirdly,this report proposes some translation strategies for the reproduction of the implicit logical relations in the target text,such as changing or transferring Theme-Rheme,voice change,amplification,linear translation,explication,proper application of punctuation,conversion,meaning change,analysis and synthesis,deformation.
