Individual education starts from family education, so family education plays animportant role in one’s growth. FanZhongyan took family education seriously and attachedimportance to the construction of family virtues. FanZhongyan who was greatly influencedby Confucianism Buddhism and Taoism under such social circumstances in Song dynastywanted to apply Confucianism, Buddhism and Taoism to the construction of family virtues.FanZhongyan founded family virtues through family epistles and family disciplines. Therefore the writer draws it into three aspects: the relationship between father and son,the relationship between husband and wife, the relationship between siblings. Therelationship between father and son requires the father to be strict as well as merciful, andthe children should take care of their parents both materially and spiritually. Therelationship between husband and wife demands the husband to be the bread winner andthe wife to be the homemaker. The relationship between siblings asks for the older brothertreats the younger well, and the younger should respect the older as well.FanZhongyan tended to instruct family members’ behaviors, improve their moralstandard, harmonize the relationship between them and promote family’s prosperitythrough these family virtues. On one hand, his thought carried on Confucianism and playsa positive role in the prevalence of Confucianism. On the other hand, his thought has itshistoric limitation. However, it still has significant meanings in promoting individualvalues, facilitating the nation’s cohesion and social stability.
